About Us

We are an organization of volunteers, comprised of both professional and amateur historians, dedicated to preserving the history of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry Regiment and Black Soldiers in the Civil War. We serve as a living monument to commemorate and honor the men who served, lost their lives and health in the Civil War, particularly those members of our namesake, the 54th Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. We strive to have the 54th Massachusetts bring history to life as accurately and authentically as possible so that people that come to see us will gain a better understanding and appreciation of their heritage and history.

Company B was formed in 1988 as a U.S. National Park Service “Volunteers in Parks” unit. Having become one of the best drilled and most authentic Civil War reenactment groups in the country, Company B is dedicated to keeping alive the proud heritage of the 54th, and all of the United States Colored Troops, by serving as living memorials and authentically interpreting the life of Black Civil War soldiers and their officers. We have committed ourselves to the education of the company membership and general public as to the lifestyle, military service and general values of the Black Civil War soldier through an authentic presentation of living history activities including battle reenactments, interpretive programs, training seminars, and similar programs.

School OutreachMembers of the Company share their in-depth understanding of the Civil War era with the public by conducting interpretive programs for the National Park Service; participating in battlefield reenactments; giving presentations and museum talks; performing demonstrations of camp life; and by appearing in parades and other special events around the country.
