Juneteenth is a holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the final abolition of slavery. This year it will be commemorated on June 11th at Theodore Roosevelt Island with a presentations by park rangers, 54th Massachusetts Infantry Reenactors, and Female Re-Enactors of Distinction (FREED). Come hear stories of what life was like during the Civil War. See soldiers march and drill and ask the ladies of FREED what civilian life was like. In addition to the re-enactors presentations, there will be a ranger-led walk out to the river at 12:00 noon which will explore the Civil War history of the island as a training ground for U.S. Colored Troops. Junior Ranger Activity books will also be available for children, they will be awarded a badge once they complete the book.
